MSV has joined other leading housing providers to partner with Greater Manchester Mental Health NHS Foundation Trust (GMMH) to pilot a new project that will deliver vital mental health support to tenants in their homes.
The integrated partnership model between the NHS and registered housing providers based within Manchester’s central locality; MSV Housing, One Manchester and Great Places, is a unique project. In a collaborative approach to address health inequalities, the partnership is piloting a focused model of individualised care to support tenants with escalating mental health concerns.
As part of the pilot, a new role has been funded for a Community Mental Health (CMHT) Housing Link Practitioner. The postholder will offer support to housing providers assessing the mental health and social care needs of vulnerable tenants. They will act as a point of contact for housing professionals to undertake Care Act Assessments and support the referral process. The new role will enable access to appropriate services, treatment pathways and help to promote early intervention, prevention and recovery for tenants.
The rising prevalence of mental health issues is a growing public health concern and housing has an important role to play. By working together to provide holistic support to vulnerable tenants, they can facilitate quick needs-based assessments and provide focussed mental health support. The group aim to avert crises, avoid tenancy break down and onwards referrals into secondary care mental health services.
The new CMHT role is expected to commence June 2021 and will be funded for 12-months initially. It will be evaluated on the impact it has on continuity of care, effective and efficient ways of working, costs savings and overall benefits to the health and wellbeing of our tenants. Should the pilot provide the expected positive outcomes, the model will be assessed with a view to rolling out and embedding within the care pathways of other housing providers and NHS Trusts across the UK.
