Homes for Ukrainian Refugees

Monday, 04 April 2022

We share in the horror at the sad and distressing events unfolding in Ukraine and we’re doing all we can to work with local authorities to support refugees forced to flee their homes because of the conflict.

We welcome the government’s Homes for Ukraine scheme and have already seen an overwhelming response from people and communities who want to help, many already offering their homes to Ukrainian families through the scheme.

If you live in an MSV home and are thinking of sponsoring a family, we want to support you to do this.

In the first instance you will need to speak to your Neighbourhood Officer and register your interest on the Homes for Ukraine webpage.

We also recommend reading the frequently asked questions on the government’s website

Anyone in the UK with a spare room or home can use this service, as long as:

  • you commit to offering accommodation for at least six months
  • if you’re not a British citizen, you have leave to remain in the UK for at least 6 months
  • you allow shared access to the kitchen and bathroom facilities during their stay.

If you are selected you will receive a ‘thank you’ payment of £350 per month under the government’s scheme. There will be some checks carried out on your household by your local authority before matching you with a family, including background checks and an inspection of your home to make sure you have room.

Other points to consider are:

  • This payment won’t impact your means-tested benefits (such as Universal Credit or council tax benefits).
  • You can’t be in breach of any of your tenancy conditions (for example, have an outstanding gas safety check).
  • You’ll need to let us know if you’re matched with a family so that we can update your household details.
  • You can't charge rent during their stay with you.
