Councillor Daniel Meredith officially opens Townley Gardens, Middleton

Wednesday, 30 April 2025

Yesterday we were joined by Cllr Daniel Meredith, Cabinet member regeneration and housing at Rochdale Borough Council to launch our new family scheme in Middleton.  Daniel is passionate about social housing and a real advocate for our sector.

New customer, Aaron, who moved into one of the new homes recently with his girlfriend and baby, has picked up a new job working on site with contractor, HJK Construction. The exciting news is they have offered him a permanent job and he is moving onwards and upwards with the company.

This week marked the opening of a new housing development, featuring 43 affordable rent family homes at Townley Gardens, Middleton.

The new development will provide 38 two-bedroom and 5 three-bedroom homes for affordable rent for families. Affordable rents are at least 20% below local market rents, making renting a home a viable option for the many families who have recently moved in.

The development adds to an already vibrant and in demand area, bringing much needed new homes to people who had applied and were on the Rochdale Housing Solutions list.

Being less than 1 mile from the centre of Middleton, the development provides excellent access to schools, shops, employment and great transport links into Rochdale and

Manchester.

Councillor Daniel Meredith was joined by residents, fellow Rochdale colleagues, MSV colleagues and HJK Construction to celebrate the official opening by planting a

commemorative tree. One new resident, Aaron, who has only recently moved into one of the new homes with his girlfriend and little boy, also secured a job on-site with the contractor, HJK Construction. He has spent 7 months honing new skills in construction and is now moving up in the business and onto a new development with the company. Building new homes is more than providing an affordable home – its building communities, creating jobs, and making memories for the new residents.

Cllr Daniel Meredith, Cabinet member regeneration and housing at Rochdale Borough Council said: “I’m really pleased to see this development and I’m particularly pleased that it’s already benefitting residents, who were previously on the housing register and now have fantastic new homes for themselves and their families. These residents are now part of a thriving community close to the centre of Middleton, a town which is set to become even more attractive as a place to live as we move forward with proposals to create a Mayoral Development Corporation to supercharge the continued regeneration of this area."

“This type of fantastic, high quality affordable housing is exactly what we want to see more of as part of our wider strategy to support the creation of more social homes across the borough. I’m delighted to have been given the opportunity to see these homes and meet with residents today.”

Charlie Norman, Chief Executive of MSV Housing Group, said: "I’m thrilled to see our partnership with Rochdale Council bring these much needed affordable homes to Middleton. MSV’s roots in Rochdale go back over 50 years, so we take great pride in working with the council to address local housing needs. It’s been an absolute pleasure to welcome the new customers to Townley Garden, and I hope they have many happy years living in a safe warm home in this lovely suburb. Thanks to Councillor Meredith for helping us get the development over the line and for joining us today to mark the launch of the scheme – it's never been more vital that we work together to deliver new social homes that people can genuinely afford. Thanks also to HJK Construction for working with us to provide homes of such high quality and Homes England for helping fund the new homes.”

Comment from HJK Construction: "At HJK Construction, we’re thrilled to have passed over the Townley Gardens development to MSV Housing. This collaboration demonstrates our shared commitment to delivering high-quality, affordable homes that families will love. At Townley Gardens, we’ve not just built houses; we’ve created high-quality homes in a great community while using sustainable practices to minimise our carbon footprint and contribute to a brighter, greener future.’

Elli Kiely of HJK Construction added, "As a multi-award-winning housebuilder; our building efforts focus on ensuring that every project we undertake is delivered on time and within budget while upholding high standards and creating developments that we’d be happy to live in ourselves. We are dedicated to shaping the North West as a region where every individual has access to a quality, affordable home.’
