MSV’s Plans to Regenerate the Site of the Former Reno Nightclub in Moss Side Approved

Thursday, 20 November 2025

MSV’s planning application to develop 212 brand new, high-quality homes on the former Reno Nightclub site has today been approved by Manchester City Council’s Planning Committee.

CGI of the Moss Side Development Scheme

Situated at the site of the old Reno nightclub on Princess Road, this much anticipated scheme will provide 212 new social and affordable homes for people local to the Moss Side area.

MSV, and it’s partners at Manchester City Council, have worked hard to genuinely listen to and incorporate feedback from local residents when designing the layout of the scheme and type of homes needed.

A summary of the scheme:-

  • Social and affordable homes (100 social rent, 28 older person social rent and 84 Rent-to-Buy) for those in most need through a local lettings plan.
  • The buildings will range between 3 to 10 storeys in height, and include a mix of 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5-bedroom homes.
  • Wheelchair accessible properties and homes for later life are included in the scheme.
  • Highly sustainable, low carbon homes supporting active travel.
  • The scheme will support local employment opportunities, creating jobs during construction and throughout the supply chain, as well as providing long-term benefits to the local economy.
  • Ideally located at the junction of Princess Road and Barnhill Street, Moss Side and close to many local facilities, such as the 60 acre Alexandra Park.
  • The scheme presents significant opportunities to realise social value in Moss Side, for example with tree planting and alleygating.

The new development will celebrate the important heritage of the former site of the Reno Club, and MSV will be seeking views from the local community on how best to achieve this.  The development also provides opportunities to reduce overcrowding across Moss Side, and free up larger homes by giving residents the chance to right-size.  Right-sizing means moving from a home that’s bigger than needed into a brand-new, easier-to-manage home.

Cllr Gavin White, Manchester City Council’s executive member for housing and development, said:  “Moving forward with this important development is great news for Moss Side. We know that demand is huge for quality affordable housing in Moss Side and this scheme will deliver large numbers of social rent homes for this community – along with rent-to-buy homes that will allow people to access the housing ladder affordably.

"This scheme will also bring back into use long-term brownfield land, which is another key priority for the city – to use the land we have at our disposal in a positive way to meet the demand for genuinely affordable housing.”

Charlie Norman, Chief Executive of MSV Housing Group, said: "I am extremely pleased that we are now able to progress with this important development. MSV is an anchor organisation in Moss Side, delivering work, skills, youth and environmental services for local residents, as well as landlord services to over 1,400 households.

"Our work in the area spans over 60 years, we are very much here for the long-term and take our responsibilities to the people of Moss Side extremely seriously. These homes are needed and necessary to not only tackle the housing crisis, but to help alleviate the over-crowding in the area, by providing beautiful, warm and safe homes. I think the extended and thorough consultation we did with local people has paid off, and we have brought together a carefully considered and well designed scheme incorporating features such as roof gardens.

"I know, having talked to many residents locally, that these homes are much anticipated, so I look forward to seeing the site progress at pace now and welcoming new customers in the future.

"I’d like to thank Cllr Gavin White, and colleagues at Manchester City Council, for choosing MSV to partner on this project, Homes England for providing funding, and the Moss Side community for their invaluable input. Also, huge thanks to MSV colleagues for their work so far and who will continue to work with the local councillors and community to deliver this scheme."
