The UK Government is ending legacy benefits and moving people onto Universal Credit. This process is expected to be completed by 31 March 2026.
If you currently receive one of the following benefits, you will need to move to Universal Credit when you receive a migration notice from the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP):
- Income Support
- Income-based Jobseeker's Allowance
- Income-related Employment and Support Allowance
- Housing Benefit
- Working Tax Credit
- Child Tax Credit
You do not need to do anything until you receive a letter from the DWP. This is called a Migration Notice.
What happens when you receive your letter?
Your letter will:
- Tell you that you need to claim Universal Credit
- Give you a deadline
- Explain how to apply
It’s important that you make your claim before the deadline in your letter. If you don’t apply in time, your existing benefit payments may stop.
Will I receive the same amount?
Most people will receive the same amount or more under Universal Credit.
If your Universal Credit entitlement would be lower at the point you move, you may receive transitional protection. This is designed to make sure you are not worse off at the time you transfer, as long as your circumstances do not change.
